所罗门是古代以色列诸王中最英明的一位。
Now two prostitutes came to the king and stood before him.
有一天，有两个妓女来见所罗门王，站在他面前。
One of them said, "My lord, this woman and I live in the same house. I had a baby while she was there with me.
一个说：“陛下，这女人跟我同住在一个屋里；我在家生产的时候，她在那里。
The third day after my child was born, this woman also had a baby.
我生了一个男婴；两天后她也生了一个男婴。
We were alone; there was no one in the house but the two of us.
这屋里只有我们两个人，没有别人。
"During the night this woman's son died because she lay on him.So she got up in the middle of the night and took my son from my side while I your servant was asleep. She put him by her breast and put her dead son by my breast.
一天晚上，她不小心压死了自己的孩子。她就半夜起来，趁我睡着从我身边抱走我的儿子，放在她怀里，然后把她那死了的孩子放在我怀里。
The next morning, I got up to nurse my son--and he was dead!
第二天早晨，我醒来要给孩子喂奶，发现他已经死了；
But when I looked at him closely in the morning light, I saw that it wasn't the son I had borne."
我仔细一看，原来那并不是我的
The other woman said, "No! The living one is my son; the dead one is yours."
孩子。”另外一个女人说：“不！活着的孩子是我的，死的才是你的！”
But the first one insisted, "No! The dead one is yours; the living one is mine."
第一个女人回答：“不！死的孩子是你的，活着的才是我的！”
And so they argued before the king.
她们就在王面前这样争吵起来。
The king said, "This one says, 'My son is alive and your son is dead,' while that one says, 'No! Your son is dead and mine is alive.'"
所罗门王心里想：“她们两人都说活着的孩子是自己的，死的是对方的。”
Then the king said, "Bring me a sword." So they brought a sword for the king.
于是他说：“给我拿一把刀来！”左右的人把刀带进来，
He then gave an order: "Cut the living child in two and give half to one and half to the other."
王就下令：“把这活着的孩子劈成两半，一半给这个女人，一半给那个女人。”
The woman whose son was alive was filled with compassion for her son and said to the king, "Please, my lord, give her the living baby! Don't kill him!"
那活的孩子的母亲因心疼自己的儿子，就对王说：“陛下，请不要杀这孩子，把他交给那女人好了！”
But the other said, "Neither I nor you shall have him. Cut him in two!"
但另一个女人说：“不必给我，也不要给她；把这孩子劈成两半吧！”
Then the king gave his ruling: "Give the living baby to the first woman. Do not kill him; she is his mother."
所罗门王说：“不要杀这孩子！把他交给第一个女人，因为她才是孩子的真母亲。”
